چکیده

We present the results of a deep search for pulsations from the nearby isolated neutron star RX J1856.5−3754 using the 450 ks Director’s Discretionary Time (DDT) Chandra LETG/HRC-S observation completed on 2001 Oct 15. No pulsations were detected. We find a 99% confidence upper limit on the pulsed fraction of ∼ 4.4% for worst-case sinusoidal pulsations with frequency . 50Hz and frequency derivatives −5 × 10 ≤ ḟ ≤ 0Hz s. This lack of detection is consistent with a neutron star with R ≈ 6 km and M ≈ 1 M⊙ at a distance ∼ 60 pc, as determined by Pons et al. (2002). The strong gravitational field of such a star sufficiently deflects X-ray emission from the emitting regions so as to prevent significant modulation of the signal. Xmm-newton Discovery of 7 S Pulsations in the Isolated Neutron Star Rx J1856.5–3754

Thanks to the high counting statistics provided by a recent XMM-Newton observation of RX J1856.5–3754 we have discovered that this isolated neutron star pulsates at a period of 7.055 s. This confirms that RX J1856.5–3754 is similar in nature to the the other six thermally emitting, nearby neutron stars discovered in soft X–rays with ROSAT. The pulsations are detected at consistent periods in se...

Timing the Nearby Isolated Neutron Star Rx J1856.5−3754

RX J1856.5−3754 is the X-ray brightest among the nearby isolated neutron stars. Its X-ray spectrum is thermal, and is reproduced remarkably well by a black-body, but its interpretation has remained puzzling. One reason is that the source did not exhibit pulsations, and hence a magnetic field strength—vital input to atmosphere models—could not be estimated. Recently, however, very weak pulsation...

Constraining the geometry of the neutron star RX J 1856 . 5 − 3754

RX J1856.5−3754 is one of the brightest, nearby isolated neutron stars, and considerable observational resources have been devoted to its study. In previous work, we found that our latest models of a magnetic, hydrogen atmosphere matches well the entire spectrum, from X-rays to optical (with best-fitting neutron star radius R ≈ 14 km, gravitational redshift zg ∼ 0.2, and magnetic field B ≈ 4 × ...

An unusual H α nebula around the nearby neutron star RX J 1856 . 5 − 3754 ⋆

We present spectroscopy and Hα imaging of a faint nebula surrounding the X-ray bright, nearby neutron star RX J1856.5−3754. The nebula shows no strong lines other than the Hydrogen Balmer lines and has a cometary-like morphology, with the apex being approximately 1′′ ahead of the neutron star, and the tail extending up to at least 25′′ behind it. We find that the current observations can be sat...
